positivityWomen, men and children everywhere need to start loving more and hating less.  It’s not an easy task.  In fact, it takes work to love.  I ask you, on a scale of 1-10 (10 being complete love and 1 being complete disgust), how much do you love your body?

It’s been said that approximately 91% of woman dislike some part of their body.  These same women often decide to forgo roller coaster dieting measures in hopes to stop hating and start loving.  In some cases this works or, at least temporarily.  In most, it continues to create the viscous thought patterns like, “I’m not good enough,” or “I have to be skinny to be loved,” or “I am unhappy in my skin.”  These thought patterns are more than just thoughts –  they actually can creep into your life and start to rule your quality of life.  Want to change this?  Let’s!

For over a decade, I’ve been working with clients of all ages on weight loss and body image issues.  I’ve always seen the mind/body connection especially when clients arrive at my doorstop looking for a rigid diet, a magic pill or strict weigh ins and accountability.  Once we get talking, it’s apparent to me and them that there’s more to it that meets the eye.

In fact, there’s often self-sabotaging thoughts and actions that are keeping them stuck.  We work closely to bring forth their inner light and transform the inner dialogue.  It’s MORE than just conscious conversation…we are actually working at the subconscious mind level where change sticks.

In order to truly have a positive image of your body and self….and have permanent results with your body, you must go beyond the food and into the mindset.  You must go beyond the food logs and scale, to a place that incorporate mind, body and soul healing.  THIS is what I have learned over the years.  THIS is golden for sustainable changes and long-lasting happiness.

Here are 5 tips that you can take today to start loving your body more!

  • Step Two:  Listen.  Listen to how you talk to yourself.  Listen to what thoughts run through your head when you’re thinking about yourself.  Do you hear yourself saying things like, “I can’t stand how I look,” or “My clothes are so tight,” or “Nothing fits,” or, “I will only be happy when I lose weight.”Once you develop more conscious awareness around your limiting beliefs, you can start changing.  If you want to take this one step further, you can start saying “delete” whenever you hear a negative thought or word about yourself cross your lips or brain.
  • Step Three:  I developed something called the “Limiting Belief Excavator” which will help you further explore areas where you might be impacting your own well-being.  You can pick this up by visiting my homepage and scrolling down to my freebie offer.I’ve had several people download this worksheet and find themselves with new insights in a matter of minutes.  Do yourself a favor and download my helpful “Limiting Belief Excavator” HERE.
  • Step Four:  Close your eyes and tune into any light that you see within yourself.  Spend at least 5 minutes focused on this light and allow it to expand into other areas of your body.  In these five minutes tune into it and allow it to become brighter and more widespread.  If you’re mind wanders, that’s ok….just recenter yourself and draw your attention back to the light.  This light is a reminder to you that LOVE exists in all of us.  We just need do a little work to bring it forth.  If you have trouble finding your light, no worries!  Instead, close your eyes and draw attention to one area of your body that you like.  It could be your eyes, or your fingernails, or you kneecaps, or your belly button….just find one area that you love, like or tolerate and start there.  In your meditative time, remind yourself of all the reasons that you like this area and be grateful for all that your body is and is doing for you.
  • Step Five:  Grab a big glass of water.  Yes, that’s right.  Grab a big glass of water and spend the next 5 minutes, 20 minutes, or one hour drinking it.  Water is life.  Bring some life into your body and allow every cell in your body to soak in the beauty of this water.  As you do so, pretend that this water is love or…maybe it is love?!  Dr. Emoto did amazing studies of water crystals and found that when we infuse water with healthy, happy, and loving thoughts the water crystals look entirely different than the water that we send negative, hateful thoughts to.  Being that your body is made of over 60% water, it’s about time you start sending more loving thoughts to the water within you (and the water you drink can help too!). Stress Impacts Wellbeing – A Simple Yet Powerful Method for Transformation

We all experience stress.  Finding ways to deal with it, overcome it and transform it can help improve your well-being. It is a fact that stress contributes to headaches, ulcers, and sleep issues. Often your stress is an opportunity to learn and grow. When you are in it, it can be tough. When you can learn from it and move past it, it is truly miraculous!

When you are stressed it is often over a situation, person, diagnosis, medical condition, body pain, etc. There are many chemical reactions that can happen in your body.  One of the most well-known is the increase of cortisol, also known as the stress hormone.  The overload of hormones that can happen as a result of stress have been shown to have far-reaching effects.  Unfortunately these effects have shown to contribute to a host of illnesses.

The stressful state seems impossible to get out of because it is over something that you just can not stop thinking about. The emotional attachment is monumental. You have lost control.

You can find ways to temporarily deal with it.  Going for a walk, talking with a friend, taking a bath, taking deep breaths, or surrounding yourself with something or someone you love are all ways we cope.

When you experience stress, you experience a state of disarray in both your body and mind. Being that your body and mind are connected, you can indeed help your body by working at the level of the mind.  Once the mind is ‘corrected’ you can then start to see how that impacts the rest of your body. One of the main processes that I use in my own life and with my clients, takes the negative impacts of stress and flips it on it’s head.

Transform Stress to Peace & Non-Attachment

To create transformation, it is best to address and honor the perceived negative impact of the situation (or person, diagnosis, condition, etc) so that you can turn it into a state of non-attachment.  We can do this through a simple and powerful set of processes called, PSYCH-K® .

We are so used to running from our stress or staying focused on a state of blame or non-forgiveness.  Instead, the idea is to turn inward and work on an energetic level by utilizing the wisdom of NLP, the mind-body connection, timeline therapy, and more.   The change to non-attachment (and sometimes forgiveness, and responsibility) can take a matter of minutes.  This is truly amazing considering how long you may have lived with the stressful state.

By doing so, the experience that you were stressed out about may still exist but your body does not go into overdrive whenever you are thinking about.  Immediately or over time, you and your body respond positively to this non-attachment.

Healing or Suffering? Approach Your Wellness Journey With Heart!

Is your approach to your health issue about suffering or is it about healing? Do you have the belief that you have to keep uncovering unearthing or the thought that beauty lies in the journey and that this journey includes magical awakenings and healthy manifestations.

In 1998 I began my own health journey which led me to work with several different healthcare practitioners, techniques, books, and coursework. Some of my healing has been clinical while a chunk of it may be referred to by some as ‘woo woo.’ In many of the approaches, I kept hearing over and over again that our healing journey could be compared to that of “peeling an onion.”

The idea with pealing the onion is that as we uncover one thing, it then leads us to the next, and then the next. There is a shedding going on and along with shedding comes tears and other deep and sometimes dark emotions. While I got this approachconcept, something didn’t fully resonate with me. I didn’t like that the onion represented to me a fair amount of suffering and also what seemed like a never-ending cycle of healing.

Where Is The Relief?

I was especially reminded of this suffering when I was prescribed a homeopathic aid that expelled so many dark emotions and left me feeling helpless for weeks. While it felt good to release cry (and there is no question in mind that crying IS therapeutic and important), I didn’t experience any other relief. In fact, that experience made me question my own ability to heal. I wanted so badly for that little white pill to work, but after taking my body through such turmoil and then finding that nothing had changed was very devastating to me and stirred up more anxiety than I had ever experienced in my life.

Peeling the onion stuck with me for years and as more stuff came up in my own life, I tossed up my own belief which was, “I’ve just got more gunk to keep clearing.” And so more gunk came up and more shedding. At times it was painful. I am sure you can relate!

As the years passed, I came to learn and own that our subconscious thoughts are a reflection of our own outer life experiences. So instead of thinking that my own healing journey required suffering, I changed my mindset into one of messages and miracles. As I did so I experienced a deeper sense of happiness and even more importantly, the relief that I had been on a mission to find. My health AND my client’s issues resolved quicker too.

Addressing healing in this way involved a certain fun factor because we were no longer digging deeper and deeper into what for some might feel like a black hole. Instead, we were celebrating any changes and allowing the Divine to help us manifest the miracles safety and at the appropriate time in our life (often quickly since God/Spirit/Divine wants us to be healthy and happy!).

The Beauty that Comes from Going Within

Less than a year ago I was on a conference call with one of my mentors, Robin Graham. On the call Myra Lovvron shared her perception of the healing process. This story was then repeated to me during a recent training that I took with Robin. Both times I heard this new perception of healing, my insides lit up with “yes!”

Instead of looking at our health journey as that of peeling an onion, we may want to consider looking at it through the eyes of an artichoke. The outer leaves of the artichoke can be a little prickly but there is this delicious rich creamy flavoring with every leaf (and even better with mayo!). As you peel through the layers, there is something at the very center of this artichoke. The heart!

What Diet Works Best?

There is no one diet that works best for everyone. If there were, weight loss products would not be selling like gangbusters. If that one diet existed, you’d already have your weight loss answer and your search for a solution would be over. You’d be thin! You might even be happier!

If you’re reading this, I bet you’ve familiar with at least two or more of the 55,959 books that come up on an Amazon “weight loss books” search. Each time you pick up a weight loss book or product you think, “this time, I am going to lose! This time, I am going to keep it off for good!” Then, this innocent discovery of a new diet leads to yet another diet and maybe five or 10 more after that. You slowly develop an unhealthy obsession with dieting, your weight, and your body.

Or maybe it’s not about the diet books at all. Maybe there’s one weight loss approach that you know works for you. You try it over and over again hoping for the same results but find they don’t stick for the long haul.

You can think of this dieting obsession and mentality as a mask. Behind the mask, the answers are revealed. Have you taken off your mask?

Eating + Mindset = Success

Welcome to my newly updated website! Thanks for stopping by, expressing your interest in healthy weight loss, and for your willingness to take off the mask. I will be sharing only the latest and greatest around weight loss, detoxification, exercise, mindset, nutrients and more. In my 10+ years as a nutritionist, I have studied and read about more diets than I can count on my fingers and toes. I have personally followed a bunch too. Trust me, it’s confusing. It’s also really tough sorting through the science which is often quite conflicting. The truth is that there are no black and white answers to most everything involving diet and weight loss and health.

The approach that I take with my clients is individual. What works for you might work for someone you know but it probably doesn’t work for everyone you know. We tend to think that if something works, it must be good for all. This is not true.

The other approach that I take is that your mind is more powerful than you think! The mind is attached to and part your body. Your mind will ultimately be the main creator of your health and well-being. Your behaviors play a big part here but it’s the mind that gets your behaviors in line with what you truly desire.

When you develop a healthy mindset around your overall health and well-being, you embrace your eating without doubt or guilt. You enjoy social time without feeling deprived. You feel nourished and are able to more intuitively tune into what the body actually needs and desires and adjust your diet daily to meet your needs. With a healthy mindset around your body, your shape transforms and you finally are living from a happier and more joyful place. Your physical body becomes something you can work with, not against.

The Miracle Mindset – A Night with Gabrielle Bernstein at FTC (January 2, 2013)

Who is Gabrielle Bernstein?

My friends asked me this question a few weeks ago after I sent them an email invitation to join me for an upcoming event to see and experience Gabby Bernstein.   You see, I had scored some free tickets from my friend Glen Collelo of Catch a Healthy Habit who regularly hosts dynamic inspirational speakers.   I graciously accepted the tickets and wanted some of my spirited sisters to join me!  One of my guests admitted that she thought we were going to see a nutritionist speak. This preconceived notion immediately shifted when Gabrielle Bernstein, otherwise referred to as “Gabby,” entered the Fairfield Theatre company (FTC) stage last night.

From Addiction to Purpose in Action

Gabrielle is a speaker, author and a role model to many women all over the world.  Her life experiences as a theater student, event promoter and public relations professional have brought her to a place of deep, very deep abundance and gratitude.  Her journey was not easy from drug and alcohol abuse to relationship heartache to financial worry.  Like many people who give up an addiction, she came to understand that she had traded one for another.  Most recently she uncovered her caffeine addiction and has given that up.

Gabby’s formal training is deeply rooted in A Course In Miracles but she has also recently found a strong connection to Kundalini Yoga.  Today she blogs, talks, writes and leads meditations inspiring others to create what she calls the, “Miracle Mindset.”

Gabby’s latest book, “May Cause Miracles” just launched and last night she shared her deepest desire.  This desire is to reach those that feel called to serve at a deeper level.  This book is a 40 day program that involves daily inspiration and practices.  She knows deep within her that our radical shifts can not only shift our own world but also the world around us.

As a health and wellness practitioner, I felt deeply connected to Gabby.  My purpose has been to serve others on the highest level and to help my clients heal from within.

You might be asking yourself, what does this have to do with nutrition and my health?

In her book, Gabby has an entire chapter dedicated to the body.  She feels like this section of the book is a very important one and fills our “container” in a way that we may have never imagined or thought about previously.  In order to thrive in society and our everyday lives, we must fuel our body with nutrients that will allow us to be able to be our very best.  She and I both agree, that our optimal self will not ‘show up’ unless the self-care is there.

By shifting our mindset, it is much easier to get to a healthy place.  In fact every corner of our life will flow and work together….I like to see this as a domino effect except in this case, the dominoes stand up tall instead of falling down!

My favorite part of the evening was the facilitated meditations.  Gabby modernizes her meditations with upbeat music and positive talk.  Her opening meditation focused on conflict resolution and the deep pain being still held from the Newtown shooting incident.

In closing she played a powerful version of the Beatles song, “Let It Be” in order to release all that we are willing to let go of.  Here is a description of the inner conflict meditation directly from Gabby.  She recommends this daily:

The night was magical in many ways.  Her down-to-earth approach resonated with the audience as attendees lined up during the Q & A session to share their own life struggles, successes and wide-eyed ah-has.  Gabby lit up the room with her smile and get-down-to business approach to spiritual practices.

She reminded us that we all have within us the ability to heal, love and live to our highest potential.

How Are Your Nutrient Levels?

Spectracell Laboratories handout on Weight Loss captures which nutrients help support the body’s cellular health and metabolism.  If your diet is inadequate or you’re not absorbing nutrients then it is highly probably that you are in a nutrient deficiency state. Sometimes even our thoughts and energetic vibe can impact the nutrient levels in our body!

Those who have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance will suffer from nutrient deficiencies due to gut permeability issues.  Athletes who are pushing their own limits will find that their bodies utilize some of their nutrients at much faster rates.  Due to their significant needs to perform optimally, they can become depleted without proper supplementation.

When it comes to successfully achieving and maintaining a healthy body composition, it can also take a symphony of nutrients.

The Spectracell lab testing  that I utilize in my office offers a 3-month snapshot of your nutrient levels.  It also offers a clear path of recommendations so that you can be well on your way to supporting your body in losing and/or maintaining weight (or whatever else your health and performance goals might be).

The test is significant and comprehensive in that it capture about 30 different nutrients including all of your B vitamins.  Most standard blood work that tests nutrient deficiencies only is able to look at a short period in time.  This test measures through the white blood cell which offers a longer life-span.  By measuring all 30 nutrients at once along side your health history, we can make some interesting correlations with your current state of health.  We can also watch over time the changes and improvements that your body is making with targeted fuel.  In this case, the fuel is vitamins and minerals!

The nutrient deficiencies that show up on the test can often be ok to live with for the short term.   However, over the weeks, months, and years ahead, you may develop unfortunate symptoms if left unaddressed.  By being proactive and getting on a targeted and recommended protocol based on the test results, you are giving yourself one of the best forms of health prevention.

Running out to your health food store to purchase supplements that you read about or hear are good for your ailment is not the best idea.  Instead, use testing (test, don’t guess!) as a guideline and baseline for moving forward and getting results.

I have seen many test results and they all vary from person to person.  To me, testing for your nutrient deficiencies (or any metabolic testing for that matter) is like a personalized road map.  You’ll also stay much more compliant in taking care of yourself knowing that you have this personal road map to follow.

You may be wondering if you can remedy your nutrient deficiencies from food alone.  My answer is no.  Typically if a nutrient deficiency shows up a functional tests such as this one, you are past the point of getting these specific nutrients from food alone.  However, it never hurts to watch your diet and start incorporating more foods that contain the nutrients that you are low in.  Adding high quality supplementation will further support your body and bring you out of the deficiency state (as shown by your follow up testing).
